The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Men's teams have all recorded excellent results in the Winter season of the Surrey league. Final results are not in yet, but it looks like another round of promotions!
If the Dulwich Men's 1st Team Winter Season was a book, and I had been asked to write a quote for the cover, then the 3 words I would use are...
"Exciting" because we were in Division C which is a very good standard, hence all the matches were very tight.
"Close" because our season ended with a record of 2 wins and 3 draws. Lots of matches going down to those ridiculous championship tie breaks. Just a small moan here but since when has a tennis match ever ended in a draw? You don't see the Roll of Honour at Wimbledon with notes like "McEnroe vs Borg, 1983, Match Drawn so they went down the boozer"
"Interesting" because at this stage I have no idea if we will be relegated, stay or promoted from Division C. My guess is that we are promoted to Division B, which would be a great achievement for the Team and the Club.
At the end of each season I always like to highlight an individual who deserves special mention. This season it is Julian "The Spin" Jones. A while ago I made the TWMD (Tactical Welsh Management Decision) to drop him from the 1st Team (not a week goes by without him reminding me) but his resurrection has been epic. In similar fashion to a slightly older and uglier Danny Cipriani, Julian has responded to his recall into the 1st Team by recording a perfect season. Yes, you read it right, a perfect season!!!
Played 10, won 10
Well done Julian and I'm sure you will be a real asset to the 2nd Team this summer.
It has been another successful season for Dulwich III.
A superb 4-0 victory over local rivals Old College 2 weeks ago, saw us finish the season W3 D1 L1. Only a suspiciously strong New Malden got the better of us, and it seems likely we will have secured second place in the division.
It is particularly pleasing to report that after subsequent promotions in Winter 06/07 & Summer 07, Dulwich III have only lost once in the past 15 fixtures!
Many thanks to all of you who played this winter. I look forward to leading you all through another successful campaign this summer.
The 6th team managed a season record of W3 D1 L1 falling only to an all conquering Downs team on an extremely windswept court above the Epsom Downs (always good to have an excuse to fall back on!) Hopefully we'll also be going up in 2nd place.
If you would like your match report to appear here, please email Dulwich Tennis.
